The best fencing materials for acreage are the ones that suit your stock, terrain, gate locations and maintenance capacity - not simply the cheapest materials per metre. On Yarra Valley properties, a good fencing decision also needs to account for wet ground, steep sections, falling limbs, wildlife and the fact that access for repairs is not always easy.
For most acreage owners, the right answer is a combination of materials. Boundary fencing may need strength and a long service life, while an internal paddock fence may be chosen for flexibility or stock control. Starting with how you use each part of the property will save money and headaches later.
Start with the job your fence needs to do
Before choosing wire, posts or mesh, be clear about what the fence must contain or exclude. Cattle, horses, sheep, goats, alpacas and dogs all put different pressure on a fence. A fence that works well for cattle may be unsafe for horses, while standard rural wire can be no match for determined goats.
Also consider whether the fence is a boundary, an internal division, a laneway, a house-yard enclosure or a temporary grazing line. Boundary fences usually warrant more substantial construction because they define the property and are harder to access for future upgrades. Internal fences can often be designed around rotational grazing, future paddock changes and practical gate access.
The site matters just as much. Rocky ground can affect post installation, low-lying areas can shorten the life of untreated timber, and heavily treed boundaries may need a more repairable design in case branches come down in a storm. Post and wire fencing: the dependable all-rounder
Post and wire fencing remains one of the most practical choices for rural acreage. It is commonly used for cattle, sheep, general boundaries and internal paddocks because it is strong, adaptable and relatively straightforward to repair when damage occurs.
A typical build uses treated timber end assemblies and strainers, with steel star pickets or timber intermediate posts supporting plain wire, barbed wire, hinge-joint wire or other suitable wire arrangements. The quality of the strainer assemblies matters greatly. Wire can only stay tight when the ends are properly built and braced for the load.
For cattle, well-strained plain wire or hinge-joint fencing can provide reliable containment. For sheep, closer wire spacing or sheep mesh helps prevent animals from pushing through. Where barbed wire is appropriate, it is generally used with care and for a specific stock-control purpose rather than as a default across every fence line.
Post and wire is a sensible option when you need long runs of fencing and want components that are readily available for ongoing repairs. The trade-off is that wire tension needs to be checked over time, particularly after trees, livestock or weather have put pressure on the line.
Choosing timber posts and steel star pickets
Treated timber posts give a traditional rural finish and are particularly useful for strainers, corners, gateways and places where extra strength is needed. Good-quality treated timber, installed to the right depth, can give years of service. In damp or poorly drained ground, treatment level and drainage become even more important.
Steel star pickets are a cost-effective choice for intermediate posts on many runs. They are quick to install, durable and easy to replace if a section is damaged. They do not provide the same rigidity as timber, so they work best as part of a properly tensioned fence with solid end assemblies.
Many acreage fences use both: timber where strength and structure count, then star pickets along the run. It is a practical balance of durability, cost and repairability.
Mesh fencing for smaller stock and property security
Mesh fencing, often called rural mesh or ringlock, is a strong option for sheep, goats, dogs and mixed-use acreage. Its close grid provides more physical containment than plain wire, making it useful where smaller animals might otherwise slip through or put their heads between wires.
Hinge-joint mesh has enough flexibility to handle uneven ground and normal stock pressure. Heavier mesh products can be worthwhile along boundaries, near roads or in areas where the fence needs to stand up to frequent use. The correct height and aperture size depend on the animals involved. Goat fencing, for example, may need tighter mesh and an additional electric offset because goats are persistent testers of weak points.
Mesh generally costs more than a simple post-and-wire fence, especially once you allow for stronger strainers and careful tensioning. But for the right application, the reduced risk of escapes can make it the better value choice. It also creates a more defined barrier around house paddocks, hobby farms and areas where dogs or poultry need extra protection.
For wildlife pressure, mesh can help in some situations, but it is not a one-size-fits-all solution. Fence design needs to consider the species you are managing, local regulations and whether you need to allow wildlife movement across the property.
Electric fencing: effective when it is maintained
Electric fencing is one of the most efficient tools for managing stock movement, particularly for strip grazing, temporary divisions and keeping animals off vulnerable areas such as dams, creeks and newly planted trees. It works as a psychological barrier, so good installation and regular checks are essential.
For cattle and horses, electric tape, rope or wire can be highly effective when it is visible, well-tensioned and powered by a suitable energiser. For sheep and goats, additional lower wires may be needed because wool, thick coats and dry conditions can reduce the effectiveness of a shock.
Electric fencing is often best used with another fence rather than as the only barrier on a boundary. A hot wire inside a mesh or post-and-wire fence can discourage leaning, rubbing and pushing, which helps extend the life of the main fence. It can also reduce pressure on timber posts and gates.
The downside is maintenance. Vegetation touching the line, poor earthing, damaged insulators and a flat battery or solar issue can quickly reduce performance. If you choose electric fencing, plan for clear access so you can inspect it easily and keep grass and branches away from the wires.
Timber fencing for horses, entrances and high-visibility areas
Post-and-rail timber fencing is often chosen for horse paddocks, driveways and prominent front boundaries. It has a classic rural appearance and gives clear visual definition, which is valuable for horses that may not see thin wire until it is too late.
For horse properties, safety comes before appearance. Rails should be smooth, secure and designed to avoid creating trapping points. Adding electric offsets can protect the rails from chewing, leaning and rubbing. Timber fencing does require ongoing attention, particularly in areas exposed to moisture, sun and fallen branches, but it can be a worthwhile investment where presentation and horse safety are priorities.
It is less commonly the economical choice for kilometres of general farm boundary. A sensible approach is often to use timber fencing at the entrance and around horse areas, then move to post-and-wire or mesh for larger paddock runs.
Gates are part of the fencing system
A strong fence can still be frustrating to use if the gates are undersized, poorly positioned or sagging. Plan gates around machinery, stock movement and the way you actually use the block. A narrow gateway that suits a ute may not suit a float, tractor, slashers or a feed delivery truck.
Farm gates need solid hanging posts, reliable fittings and enough clearance to swing freely on uneven ground. Where stock pressure is high, gate latches and adjoining fence sections need to be built to handle animals gathering at the opening. Consider whether a second gate, laneway or holding area would make day-to-day stock handling safer and easier.
How to choose the right material mix for your property
The best choice is rarely one material used everywhere. A practical acreage layout may use a strong mesh boundary beside a road, post and wire across general cattle paddocks, electric divisions for grazing management, and timber rails around the house or horse arena. This puts the budget into the areas where the fence has the most work to do.
When comparing quotes, look beyond the lineal metre rate. Ask what is included for strainers, post spacing, wire type, mesh height, gate hardware, clearing, difficult ground and removal of old fencing. A lower upfront figure can become expensive if the design does not suit the site or leaves you with frequent repairs.
