How to Fence Uneven Farmland on Your Property

A fence can look straight from the ute track and still be a problem where it matters. On rolling paddocks, gullies and uneven ground, gaps under the wire, loose strainers and badly placed gates soon create extra work. Knowing how to fence uneven farmland starts with reading the land before a single post goes in.

For Yarra Valley properties, the right approach depends on the slope, soil, stock, drainage and how you need to move machinery through the farm. A fence that suits a quiet boundary line may not be the best choice for a cattle paddock, horse enclosure or frequently used laneway.

Start by walking the proposed fence line

Do not rely on a map or a view from one end of the paddock. Walk the full line in both directions and look for the features that will affect the build: sharp rises, washouts, rocky patches, low wet ground, old tree roots and places where water naturally crosses the boundary.

Mark the corners, changes in direction and proposed gate locations first. These are the points that need the strongest foundations. Then consider whether the fence should follow the contour of the land or run on a straighter boundary line.

Following the contour generally works well on broad, rolling country. It keeps the fence closer to the ground and reduces gaps beneath the bottom wire. A straighter line can make sense where a surveyed boundary demands it, or where you need a clean line between paddocks. The trade-off is that steeper rises and hollows may need closer post spacing, additional droppers or purpose-built sections to keep stock contained.

It is also worth checking access before work begins. A good fence line is no use if post-driving equipment, materials and a ute cannot safely reach it. On difficult sites, planning the delivery point and work sequence saves time and avoids unnecessary damage to paddocks.

Build the strength into the corners and slopes

On uneven country, strainers do more than hold the ends of a fence. They carry the load created by wire tension as the fence rises, falls and changes direction. Corners, gateways, steep grade changes and long runs all need properly installed strainer assemblies.

A solid strainer should be set deep enough for the soil conditions and braced to resist the pull of the wires. In firm ground, a well-built timber strainer and stay may be suitable. Softer, wet or disturbed ground may call for longer posts, more substantial bracing or a revised fence line to find better footing.

Do not treat every hill crest as a minor detail. If the line changes sharply over a rise, putting a strainer or intermediate brace near that point can stop the fence from gradually losing tension. Likewise, a dip that carries water may need stronger end assemblies on either side rather than relying on one long, heavily loaded run.

Posts should generally be installed plumb, even on a slope. Leaning them to match the hillside can reduce their holding strength and leaves the finished fence looking rough. Consistent post depth matters too. A post that seems adequately buried on the downhill side may be too shallow when measured from the uphill ground level.

Choose post spacing to suit the ground

Standard post spacing on level ground is only a starting point. On a smooth, gentle slope, normal spacing may work well. On broken country, shorter spacing helps the wires follow the land and gives droppers more support.

The goal is not to put in as many posts as possible. It is to use enough support that the bottom wire stays close to the ground, the top wires remain at the intended height and the fence does not sag between posts. Rocky sections can also affect spacing, as the practical post position may need to move slightly to avoid an obstruction.

Keep the fence close to the ground without choking drainage

The most common issue on uneven farmland is the gap under the fence. Sheep, goats, calves, dogs and wildlife can find a surprisingly small opening, while larger stock may push through where the bottom wire lifts over a hump or washout.

Across rises, use closer posts and droppers so the bottom wire follows the ground. In hollows, assess whether the low point is simply uneven terrain or an active drainage path. For a shallow dip, a carefully shaped fence line with extra support may be enough. For a watercourse or regular runoff path, forcing wire tightly into the ground can trap debris, put pressure on the fence and cause washouts.

In those locations, a purpose-designed flood or creek crossing section may be the better answer. It allows water and debris to pass while maintaining an effective barrier when conditions are normal. The right design depends on the volume of water, the stock being contained and whether the crossing needs to withstand seasonal flows.

Avoid filling gullies with loose soil just to create a level fence line. It often washes away in the first heavy rain. Working with the land is usually more reliable than trying to reshape it on a small scale.

Select wire and fence height for the job

Terrain affects the fence structure, but stock type determines the wire layout. Cattle fencing needs enough strength and visible definition to discourage pressure on the line. Sheep fencing usually needs a lower, tighter arrangement to prevent animals slipping underneath. Horses need a highly visible fence with materials chosen to reduce injury risk, while exclusion fencing may require smaller mesh and careful attention at ground level.

Barbed wire can be useful for some rural applications, but it is not the answer to poor post placement or loose tension. On sloping country, poorly tensioned barbed wire can become a hazard and is harder to maintain. Plain wire, hinge-joint mesh, electric offsets or a combination of materials may be more suitable depending on the animals and the purpose of the paddock.

Electric fencing deserves particular care on uneven ground. If the wire sits too high over a hollow, stock can pass underneath without receiving a correction. If vegetation grows into the wire in low, damp areas, it can drain power from the system. Plan for regular clearing and make sure the energiser, earthing and wire layout suit the length of the fence.

Place gates where the land works with you

A gate installed in the wrong spot becomes a daily frustration. On uneven farmland, avoid placing gates at the bottom of a steep slope where water, mud and gravel collect. A gate should open and close without dragging, and there should be enough level ground for a vehicle, trailer or machinery to approach it safely.

Where possible, set gates on a stable, slightly raised area with room to turn. Consider prevailing stock movement as well. Livestock naturally favour some routes through a paddock, and a gate placed in line with those routes can make mustering easier.

Gate posts need to be stronger than ordinary line posts, especially for wide farm gates. The weight of a gate, repeated use and uneven ground all place extra load on the hinge post. Allow for clearance beneath the gate, but not so much that stock can get under it as the ground settles.

Install in a sensible order

A reliable build normally begins with clearing only what is necessary along the fence line. Remove fallen timber, obvious rubbish and vegetation that will interfere with wire tension or future maintenance, but avoid disturbing soil more than needed on erosion-prone slopes.

Set the corner, end and major change-of-grade strainers first. Once these are braced and secure, run a guide line to confirm the route and levels before installing the remaining posts. This gives you the chance to correct a poor line early, rather than discovering a major gap after the wire is on.

Install line posts and droppers, then run and tension the wires progressively. Do not over-tension a long run in one hit, particularly where temperatures are high or the ground is unstable. Wire expands and contracts, and excessive tension can pull strainers out of line or cause wire to fail later.

After the fence is complete, walk it again. Check every low point, crest, gate opening and strainer. Look at it from the stock side, not just from the access track. That is where gaps and weak points are easiest to spot.

When a site visit is worth it

Some slopes are straightforward. Others have hidden rock, drainage issues, old fence lines or access restrictions that only become clear on foot. If the job involves long boundaries, multiple paddocks, creek crossings, high-value stock or difficult ground, a practical site visit can prevent expensive changes halfway through the build.

A clear quote should explain the fence type, materials, strainer requirements, gate locations and any likely challenges such as rock drilling or wet ground.
