Not every paddock needs the same fence. A boundary fence holding cattle has different demands to an internal horse paddock, a laneway, a garden boundary or a temporary division for rotational grazing. Choosing materials based only on the lowest upfront price can leave you with a fence that is underbuilt for the job.
Think first about what needs to stay in or out, how much pressure the fence will take, and whether it needs to carry electric wire. Cattle, sheep, horses, alpacas and exclusion fencing all call for different wire spacing, heights and post strength. 2. Skipping a proper site walk

4. Setting posts without allowing for local ground conditions
Post depth is not a one-size-fits-all measurement. In firm, dry ground, a post may hold differently than it does in clay, sandy soil, rocky country or a damp low-lying paddock. Shallow posts are more likely to lean when stock rub against the fence or when the ground becomes saturated after heavy rain.
The same applies to post spacing. Wider spacing can reduce material costs, but it may allow wire to sag or place too much load on individual posts. On uneven terrain, closer spacing is often needed to follow the ground and prevent animals finding a gap underneath. The right balance depends on the fence style, the ground and the livestock involved.

5. Putting gates where they are convenient on paper
A gate should make farm work easier, not create another daily headache. It is easy to place a gate at the closest point to a driveway, but that may not suit stock movement, ute access, tractor turning space or water flow after rain.
Before fixing the location, consider how you will move animals through the area and whether machinery can approach the gate without cutting up the ground. Gates near corners can also put pressure on fence assemblies if they are not properly designed. Allow room for a gate to swing freely, latch securely and remain usable when the ground is wet.
6. Installing gates that are too narrow or too light
A narrow farm gate may be fine for a person or quad bike, but it becomes a problem when you need to bring through a tractor, slasher, stock trailer or delivery vehicle. Replacing a gate later can mean altering posts, hinges and surrounding fence work, so it pays to think ahead.
Gate strength matters as much as width. A gate that sags, drags or has weak hinges quickly becomes difficult to operate. Matching the gate, hinge set and posts to the opening and expected use makes everyday access safer and less frustrating. If the entrance is used regularly, a well-built gate setup is worth the investment.
7. Forgetting about water and drainage
Water is hard on fencing. Run-off can wash soil away from posts, create boggy gateways and carry debris into low sections of a fence. In gullies or drainage paths, a standard fence design may not be the best option because it can catch branches and flood debris.
It is better to identify water movement before installation than deal with undermined posts later. Sometimes that means changing the line slightly, reinforcing a low point or using a purpose-built arrangement that lets water pass without taking the fence with it. Gateways need particular attention, as repeated vehicle traffic on wet ground can turn a useful entrance into a deep rut.

8. Mixing materials without a clear reason
There is nothing wrong with using different post types or wire products where they suit the job. The problem is mixing materials simply because they are on hand, without considering strength, longevity and compatibility. For example, a heavy wire setup paired with light end posts may create problems once it is tensioned.
Use materials that suit the fence purpose and local conditions. Galvanised wire, quality star pickets, treated timber posts and properly matched fittings each have a role, but they need to work together. Buying the cheapest available option can be tempting for a long run, yet premature replacement often costs more in labour and disruption than doing it properly the first time.
9. Over-tensioning or under-tensioning wire
Wire needs enough tension to remain effective, but too much tension can strain posts, snap wires and leave no room for changing temperatures or ground movement. Too little tension allows sagging, makes a fence easier for stock to push through and looks untidy.
Correct tension depends on the wire type, fence length and construction. High-tensile wire behaves differently from plain wire, and electric fencing has its own setup requirements. Tensioning should be done carefully, with sound strainers and suitable components, rather than by pulling every line as tight as possible.
10. Treating maintenance as an afterthought
Even a well-built rural fence needs checking. Storm damage, fallen limbs, soil movement, wildlife and stock pressure can all create small faults that become bigger repairs when ignored. A loose wire or leaning post may be quick to fix early, but it can lead to a broken section and escaped livestock if left too long.
A walk along key boundaries after strong wind, heavy rain or a period of dry ground movement is worthwhile. Check gates, latches, strainers, electric connections and areas where animals regularly gather. Keeping vegetation off electric wires and clearing branches before they fall can also prevent avoidable damage.
Get the fence line right for the way you live and work
The best rural fencing is not always the most expensive option. It is the fence that suits the property, holds up to the work it will do and can be maintained without constant patching.
