What Fencing Suits Mixed Livestock on Your Farm?

A fence that holds cattle can still leave a gap for lambs. A fence that safely contains horses may be more expensive than a sheep paddock needs. That is why the question, what fencing suits mixed livestock, cannot be answered by choosing one standard fence and hoping it covers every animal on the property.

For Yarra Valley farms and acreage blocks, the best approach is usually to design around the smallest, most determined or most vulnerable stock, then make sure the fence is strong enough for the larger animals. Good fencing also needs to suit the land, gateways, handling areas and the way you move stock day to day.

What fencing suits mixed livestock?

For most mixed-livestock properties, a well-built combination fence is the practical answer. This commonly means hinged joint or ringlock mesh with a plain or barbed top wire, supported by properly strained end assemblies and suitable posts. Where cattle, horses or goats are involved, one or more electric offset wires can add another level of control.

The exact layout depends on your stock mix. Sheep and goats need smaller openings near ground level. Cattle need a fence with enough height and strength to discourage leaning and pushing. Horses need a highly visible fence without sharp edges or loose wire that could cause injury. A single fence can work across several paddocks, but only if those competing needs are considered before materials go in the ground.

A practical mixed-stock fence is not always the cheapest option per metre. It is often the better value option because it reduces escapes, patch-up repairs and the frustration of constantly separating animals that have found a weak point.

Start with the animals most likely to test the fence

When choosing fencing, think beyond the animals you have this month. Consider what you may agist, buy or breed in the next few years. A property running a few cattle and sheep now may later carry goats, horses or smaller lambs. Building the right framework at the start is generally easier than replacing a whole boundary fence later.

Cattle

Cattle place a lot of pressure on fences, especially around water points, feed areas and gateways. They will lean, rub and push if there is good feed on the other side or if a fence line is poorly strained. For cattle, strong posts, reliable strainers and a well-tensioned top line matter as much as the mesh itself.

Hinged joint fencing with a top wire is common for cattle and sheep. An electric offset wire on the inside of the fence can be especially useful where cattle tend to lean over or test the boundary. It keeps pressure off the physical fence and can extend its working life.

Sheep and lambs

Sheep require smaller mesh openings than cattle. Larger rural mesh can allow lambs to squeeze through, particularly when feed looks better in the next paddock. Ringlock or hinged joint mesh with closely spaced verticals near the bottom is generally a sound choice for sheep containment.

Fence height also matters. Adult sheep are not usually great jumpers, but they can find their way through loose mesh, washouts and gaps beneath gates. A fence line should follow uneven ground closely enough that stock cannot walk underneath it.

Goats

Goats are often the deciding factor in a mixed-livestock fencing plan. They climb, lean, squeeze through small gaps and will quickly identify a gate latch that is not secure. If goats are part of the picture, choose close-spaced mesh and allow for a properly installed electric wire where needed.

Electric fencing is very effective for goats when it is installed and maintained correctly. It must have a dependable energiser, good earthing and clear vegetation beneath the wire. A poorly powered electric line teaches goats that the fence is optional, which makes life harder from that point on.

Horses

Horse fencing needs a separate safety check. Standard farm mesh may be suitable in some situations, but it must be well tensioned, correctly selected and free from protruding wire ends. Horses can injure themselves if they run into poorly maintained wire, especially in smaller paddocks or areas where they are likely to play, bolt or crowd around a gate.

Many horse owners prefer post and rail, horse-safe mesh, or a visible electric tape or braided line in addition to a physical fence. Visibility is important. A horse should be able to recognise the boundary before it is close enough to make contact.

Match the fence to each part of the farm

Not every fence on a mixed farm needs the same specification. Boundary fencing, paddock divisions, laneways and holding yards all do different jobs. Spending wisely means putting the strongest design where stock pressure and escape risk are highest.

A secure boundary fence is usually worth the investment, particularly beside roads, neighbouring properties or waterways. Internal paddocks can sometimes use a simpler permanent fence or temporary electric subdivision, depending on stock numbers and grazing plans. Near yards and raceways, stock pressure is concentrated, so heavier posts, better bracing and reliable gates are needed.

Laneways deserve careful thought too. Cattle and sheep moving regularly along the same route will push against corners and bottlenecks. If horses use the lane, avoid sharp fittings and build with visibility in mind. A fence that works well in an open paddock may not be right beside a busy handling area.

Mesh, wire and posts all need to work together

A good fence is a system. Strong mesh will not perform properly if the strainer assemblies are weak, and quality posts will not fix poorly tensioned wire. On rural properties with slopes, wet ground, rocky sections or mature trees, the installation method is just as important as the material choice.

For many mixed-stock applications, galvanised hinged joint or ringlock mesh provides a useful base. The mesh height and aperture size should reflect the smallest stock. Add a top plain wire for strength, and consider electric offsets for cattle or goats. Barbed wire still has a place on some rural boundaries, but it needs careful consideration around horses and where people may be working close to the fence.

Post spacing should account for terrain and stock pressure. Long straight runs on firm, level ground may allow wider spacing than rolling country or soft sections near creeks. Corners, rises, gateways and changes of direction need solid strainer posts and bracing. These are the points where a fence carries its load.

Timber posts remain a popular choice for their strength and traditional appearance. Steel star pickets can be cost-effective for line posts and are readily suited to many farm fencing jobs. In practice, a combination of strong timber strainers and steel line posts is common, but the right choice depends on your soil, budget and intended fence life.

Do not overlook gates and ground clearance

A well-built fence can still fail at the gate. Gates should match the width and purpose of the opening, whether it is for a ute, tractor, stock trailer or routine stock movement. They need sturdy hanging posts, practical latches and enough clearance to open when the ground is wet or uneven.

For goats and sheep, make sure there are no easy gaps beside or below the gate. For cattle, choose a gate and hinge setup that can cope with repeated use and occasional pressure from stock. If horses are present, avoid arrangements that leave sharp fittings or loose chains in their path.

Ground clearance is another common trouble spot. Gullies, eroded areas and undulating paddocks can create an opening beneath otherwise sound mesh. The fence should be contoured to the land, with extra attention given to drainage lines and places where water may undermine the bottom edge.

Plan for maintenance before the first post is installed

All rural fencing needs checking, particularly after storms, fallen branches, flooding, livestock pressure or a dry spell that shifts soil around posts. A sensible design makes those checks quicker. Clear fence lines where possible, accessible gates and strong construction at likely pressure points all reduce maintenance headaches.

Electric fencing needs regular attention. Vegetation touching the wire can drain power, and damaged insulators or poor earth systems can reduce its effectiveness. Keep in mind that electric wire is best used as part of a sound fencing plan, not as a substitute for an inadequate physical boundary where escape would create a serious risk.

If your property has a mix of cattle, sheep, goats and horses, a site visit is often the clearest way to settle the design.
